Led by the Ven. Nikki Groarke, Archdeacon of Dudley

There are three books of the Bible (including the Apocrypha) that are named after their heroines: Ruth, Esther and Judith. This summer, our lunchtime learning sessions are on these three books, among the lesser known texts of the Bible.

The book of Esther comes in two editions. Depending on your Bible you may have copies of both! There’s one version in the Old Testament, translating the original Hebrew text, which famously doesn’t mention God, and a longer Greek version in the Apocrypha which explicitly puts God into the story. The story of Esther is the basis of the Jewish feast of Purim, and is set at a time when the Persian empire was at its height. It tells of Esther’s part in leading to a miraculous deliverance of the Jewish people in the face of antisemitism.

During this session the Archdeacon of Dudley, Nikki Groarke will explore this story, its heroine, and its continuing relevance for today.
