Chair of our Peru partnership group, Phil Bradford, asks us to pray for Peru as they look for a new Assistant Bishop.
He writes:
As a diocese, we are currently praying for those tasked with choosing a new Bishop of Worcester next month, but our companion Diocese of Peru is also in the process of selecting a new bishop.
On 31 May, a special synod in Lima will elect a new Bishop Coadjutor. We do not have coadjutors in the Church of England, but they are found in the Roman Catholic Church and certain provinces of the Anglican Communion, most notably the Episcopal Church in the United States. The role of the Bishop Coadjutor is to assist the diocesan bishop in running the Diocese, and the coadjutor automatically succeeds to the role of Diocesan Bishop when that person retires or leaves office.
In Peru, the aim is that the man chosen (the Diocese does not currently ordain women as priests or bishops) will assist Bishop Jorge over the next five years ahead of his retirement. It is likely that he will be consecrated as bishop in September. This will allow him to gain experience of acting as bishop and running the diocese ahead of assuming the role of Diocesan Bishop and ensure a swift and smooth succession. It is thus an important appointment for the next stage in the Diocese of Peru.
Please pray for Bishop Jorge and the synod at this time, that God may guide them in their choice, and that the chosen candidate may receive the grace and wisdom of the Holy Spirit as he prepares to embark on his new role.
