On Saturday 28 September 2024, St Philip’s Church in Webheath hosted a double celebration marking the 60th anniversary of the Worcestershire Organists Association and the restoration of St Philip’s historic Nicholson Organ.
The event brought together around fifty people, including members of the Association, St Philip’s congregation, and guests from other churches. The afternoon was filled with music, history, and memories, as the community celebrated the rich history of the organ and the Association.
During the event, attendees were treated to a presentation on the history of the Nicholson Organ, which dates back to 1890, the same era that saw significant progress in public infrastructure and cultural developments in Britain. The Revd Sarah Jayne said: “it’s great that the organ has now been restored and will continue to provide music for worship and celebration”
To demonstrate the organ's versatility and capabilities, several organists performed a variety of music. Keith Hearnshaw played a Minuet by John Stanley and a Toccata by Boëllmann, while Michael Carter delighted the audience with Songs from the Shows and the theme from Superman. Attendees were also invited to try the organ themselves, further showcasing its range.
Reflecting on the occasion, Philip Jarvis said: “It brought back memories of the Association’s formation in 1964. This afternoon has not only been a celebration of music but also of community history”
The afternoon concluded with refreshments and a very special cake!
