Three Lent gatherings held in different locations in Worcester will explore issues of immigration and asylum and have been set up following a city-wide 'Building Hope' meeting.
Area Dean of Worcester, Kalantha Brewis said:
"'Building Hope' was attended by our MP Tom Collins, police, city councillors, representatives of Worcester City Welcomes Refugees, representatives from the University and representatives of the Sikh and Muslim communities. That meeting was around concerns about the growth of far right activity in our city and specifically the intimidation of ethnic minority communities through the proliferation of St George's flags and through the spreading of misinformation on social media."
"Following this meeting, there was a real sense that as people of peace, we needed to educate and inform our communities, celebrate diversity and communicate and network more effectively. These three gatherings have been organised to offer the chance to hear some of the facts about immigration, and about asylum seekers in Worcester.
"In the light of a lot of misinformation in the press and on social media, the gatherings will consider what the underlying issues are and there will be a chance to ask questions and hear from Worcester City Welcomes Refugees, and from the City Council representative for Sanctuary City status."
The meetings will take place:
- Monday 23 February, 7.30pm at St Martin's Church, London Road
- Wednesday 4 March, 2pm at St Stephen's Church in Barbourne
- Tuesday 10 March, 7pm at St John in Bedwardine Church
All are welcome - do bring your friends.
