Children's Society - Good Childhood report

Published: 12th October 2022

Children's Society logoIn September, The Children’s Society published their 11th Good Childhood Report

The key findings in this year’s report show that UK children’s happiness with their lives continues to decline.  More children are unhappy with their appearance than with family, friends, and school.  Happiness with school and schoolwork declines significantly with age and was significantly lower among children in lower income households.

Over half of parents and carers feel that the pandemic has had a negative impact on the education of their children.  And 85% of parents and carers are concerned about the impact of the cost of living crisis on their household/family over the next 12 months, which will only get worse as this crisis unfolds.   The cost to children of growing up in 2022 is high.

What can you do to help?

  • You can read the full report (or at the foot of the same page are summary versions of the this year’s findings,) to gain an understanding of the challenges being faced by children.
  • Raise your hand to add your name to our campaign to put children’s well-being at the heart of this Government’s agenda, and encourage others to do the same.
  • Contact the Community Relationship Manager and invite a volunteer speaker to visit and talk about his years findings to a group.  Knowledge in society is key to overturning the ongoing decline in children’s happiness and well-being, and to setting the path for their long lasting growth.  We will fulfil as many talk requests as we can.
  • Join a team of volunteers who talk about the charity’s work by becoming a Volunteer Speaker – a flexible role, which requires a commitment to deliver only four talks per year, and we have many vacancies.  When you apply, you will have opportunity to ask questions and learn more before committing.

The Children's Society's Relationship Manager for the West Midalands is Rachel Brockie: 01367 241273 or rachel.brockie@childrenssociety.org.uk
