Permission granted to transform St Helen’s Church, Worcester

Published: 22nd May 2020

A bold scheme of works to transform St Helen’s Church on Worcester High Street has this week been given the go ahead by the Chancellor who has granted the necessary faculty.

Alongside a new toilets, kitchen facilities, and a new stone floor laid throughout this historic building, the works (expected to start in early 2021) will see a dramatic new accessible entrance to the church appear on the High Street, complete with a bold sculptural screen designed by artist Matthew Sanderson.

Since 2003 St Helen’s has been under the stewardship of All Saints Church. The Revd Owen Gallacher from All Saints Church said: “In these difficult times we are heartened by the prospect of seeing this largely hidden gem right in the centre of Worcester opened up to be a place of warm welcome, togetherness and community.”

The winning design for the large High Street facing artwork will be an eye-catching metallic representation of the Tree of Life – a biblical image that speaks of “the healing of the nations” (Revelation 21).

“Although these are uncertain times for everyone, very much including the church of England, we are glad that the long and varied history of St Helen’s looks set to continue now for generations to come in offering refuge and welcome to all. Our prayer is that many more may find here the belonging and hope of healing that we have found in Jesus Christ,” said Owen.
