New Director of Mission & Ministry

Joseph DiwakarJoseph Diwakar has been appointed as the new Director of Mission and Ministry for the Diocese.

Joseph is currently Tutor and Lecturer in Church History at St Mellitus College, London, where he has worked for six years, as well as being a member of the Archbishop’s Council. As Director of Mission and Ministry, he will be responsible for leading and developing the team which oversees our priority of equipping ministers for mission. He replaces Roger Latham who left to become Vicar of Malvern Priory earlier this year.

At St Mellitus, Joseph teaches several modules in church history and world Christianity, and as a formation tutor has worked closely with full and part-time ordinands from across the Church of England. His previous role was working on diocesan strategy for the Diocese of London. In addition to his work in theological education, Joseph has been a member of the Archbishops' Council since 2019, where he helps to oversee the strategy, governance and finances of the national Church of England. He was the youngest ever appointee to this role.

Joseph said: “I am really excited to be taking up this job at this point in the Diocese of Worcester's 1400-year history. I am very struck that, while the world around us changes culturally, politically and financially, some things stay the same: God doesn't change, and nor does the basic shape of our Christian vocation and ministry. I am looking forward to befriending and championing our clergy and lay leaders as the Diocese continues with its vision to grow as Kingdom People.”

Bishop Martin said: “Joseph brings a huge amount of relevant experience to this role. I hope that he will challenge and help us as we continue to equip our ministers for mission, which is such a vital part of helping our churches to grow in health and sustainability. I am delighted he has been called to serve in Dudley and Worcestershire and pray for God’s blessing on him and his family as they come to join us here.”

Joseph will be joining the diocesan team in June. He will be moving to Worcestershire from the Southeast with his young family and miniature poodle, Dolores.
