Experience Easter at Astley School

Alison Reakes-Williams, Headteacher at Astley CE Primary School, writes:

Ribbons in the churchyardOn a beautiful sunny day, Astley School took their learning about Easter up to the churchyard at St Peter's Church, Astley. Children wereable to experience the Easter events as a slow journey including times ofreflection and creative responses.

In Gethsemane, we learnt how Jesus was strengthened by an angel inhis time of need. Our ribbons blowing in the breeze enabled us to reflect onwhere we find strength. The children made playdoh models representing their ownexperiences of fear.

Discovering the story of PeterWe met Peter in the courtyard and heard hisstory of betrayal. Children wrote or drew about their own regrets and watchedthem disappear in the fire. We then heard how Jesus had mended his relationshipwith Peter through forgiveness.

Our journey further through the churchyard tookus to Golgotha where we made heard the account of Jesus crucifixion beforethree wooden crosses installed in the churchyard. Children then made their ownrustic crosses.

Exploring the garden caveWe ended our journey exploring the garden caveand considering that hope comes after sadness and joy follows pain.

This day was made possible with wonderfulsupport from St Peters Church, Cornerstone Family Church, staff and governors.
