Eco-warriors at Hindlip School

Children from Hindlip first school in hi-vis jackets standing next to the meadow where they are planting treesPupils from Hindlip CE First School have taken part in an exciting environmental initiative, planting over 150 trees in Bull Meadow, Fernhill Heath. The Year 3 and 4 children, armed with shovels and big smiles, worked together to create a greener future as part of a national tree-planting experiment.

Using the Miyawaki method—where trees are planted closely together to encourage fast growth—the children carefully placed each sapling in the soil. Before planting, they dipped the trees into a special fungi mixture designed to help them communicate and grow healthily. Despite getting their hands muddy, the young environmentalists were full of enthusiasm, knowing they were creating new habitats for wildlife and enhancing their local community space.

Matilda, a Year 3 pupil, said: “This is very exciting, I’ve never planted plants in the Miyawaki way before.” The children’s efforts will leave a lasting impact, and local residents are encouraged to visit Bull Meadow in the future to see how the trees flourish.

Bull Meadow itself is a remarkable project. Once agricultural land, the 22-acre site was purchased by the residents of Fernhill Heath to be transformed into a thriving community open space. The tree-planting initiative was part of a wider project led by Julie Grainger from the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, in collaboration with Fernhill Heath Parish Council and Hindlip CE First School.

This inspiring effort highlights the power of community and the dedication of young people to protecting the environment. Thanks to their hard work, Bull Meadow is on its way to becoming a beautiful, green haven for everyone to enjoy.
