Sarah Kings role in a forthcoming city concert is notonly a celebration of the patron saint of music - itll be a family affair.
The Worcester soprano joins her fellow cathedral chamberchoir singers to perform music for St Cecilias Day by composers from acrossthe centuries - including her own brother.
Shell be taking the solo role for the piece Meditations,by sibling Steven, as well as some other pieces on the programme of the concert O Sing Aloud! to be performed at St. Martin's Church, London Road Worcester on 23 November.
Its not the first time Sarah, from Lower Wick hasperformed her brothers music but she always finds every opportunity a proudmoment, even if it does bring an additional pressure to those that come withbeing one of the choirs regular soloists.
I want to give my best, she says, but Im also awarethe audience wont necessarily know the piece, which can take the pressure offa bit!
Its obviously a help having your composer on hand forany performance tips and, says Sarah, a choir member for 18 years, Steven isalways happy to help.
Although it tends to be more about what he means and istrying to achieve than the mechanics of singing, which he leaves (in this case)to our conductor Stephen Shellard. she adds.
Steven and Sarah are Worcester born and bred. He attendedKings School and, now living in Bristol, his roles include accompanist andassistant chorus master to the Bristol Choral Society and the BBC NationalChorus of Wales. He also conducts several choirs and is a seasoned pianist,soloist and chamber musician.
He has earned several awards and nominations for composingand his works have been performed at Worcesters Three Choirs festival, aroundBristol and beyond.
Sarah went to the girls grammar school before gaining amusic degree and pursuing careers in stock broking and IT. She is currently acarer for her father.
A conducting engagement means Steven cant attendWorcester Cathedral Chamber Choir's O Sing Aloud! concert in St MartinsChurch, London Road, but Sarah knows hell be there in spirit. He does do theproud brother bit, she grins. The sibling pride is usually mutual!
O Sing Aloud! is due to take place on November 23 andalso includes works by fellow Worcester composer Ian Venables, an arrangementof American classics by former Worcester Cathedral Director of Music, Dr DonaldHunt.
Performing Vaughan Williamss The Lark Ascending isviolinist Shula Oliver and readings will be delivered by GabrielleBullock. Christopher Allsop, KingsSchools Assistant Director of Music provides organ and piano accompaniment forthe evening that, under the baton of Stephen Shellard, also includes Faur,Mozart and Parry.
