This Christmas marks a very special milestone for Maggs Day Centre, Worcestershire’s homelessness charity, as it celebrates 40 years since first opening its doors in December 1985.
Maggs began when local people came together after the tragic death of a man named John Maggs, who was rough sleeping in Worcester. That act of compassion created a safe place where those experiencing homelessness could find warmth, support, dignity, and hope — a mission which continues to this day.
This year, Maggs invites churches to join them in their “Help Rewrite the Story — Give the Gift of Hope” Christmas campaign.
There are simple ways you can support:
- Gift of Hope Baubles — symbolic baubles that fund meals, warm clothing, sleeping bags, and essentials
- Storybook Wishlists — collect warm clothing, toiletries, food items, or supermarket gift cards
- Community “Chapters of Hope” — schools, churches, and groups creating displays or prayers of hope
Every gesture — whether a donation, a prayer, a shared story, or a warm meal — helps someone move forward with dignity and feel cared for this winter.
Melissa Blewitt, Maggs Fundraising, Communications and Relationships Manager said:
“The need has grown, but so has the kindness of our community. Your support helps us continue offering warmth, safety, and hope to those who need it most.”
