In recognition of the fact that for clergy it is always the case that a change of post means moving house, it is appropriate to build in an arrangement that allows time between appointments.
The following guidelines are allowed by the Bishop of Worcester as periods of special leave for the purposes of Regulation 22(5) of the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Regulations 2009.
An interval of up to a month should be taken between the occasion when a priest bids farewell in one post and his/her licensing or institution to the next.
In the case of clergy retiring, one month's leave is permitted between their farewell in the parish and the date of their formal vacation of their post.
It would normally be expected that a person would then move out by the time they had vacated their post, and only in very special circumstances would permission be given to occupy the house thereafter and during which an open market rental payable to the sequestrators or the glebe would normally apply. The need for any such arrangements should be discussed as early as possible with the Diocesan Surveyor.
Regulations 12 and 14 of the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Regulations 2009 do not currently apply to any office holders in the Diocese of Worcester. In the event that they become applicable the arrangements set out above will be revised.
