Exploring how the psalms enrich our prayer life.

The Psalms are the book of the Old Testament most often quoted in the New Testament. They have formed the backbone of Christian daily prayer since at least the fourth century. They have been central to Anglican Matins and Evensong, and continue to be used today, although much less than they have been in the past. The psalms embrace a range of human emotions, including those we normally don’t make much room for in church. Lament and depression sit alongside joy and thankfulness. Among the many psalms of blessing there are also psalms with curses. How do we make best use of these ancient poems and prayers today? How can they enrich our life of prayer, and help us grow in the depth of our faith and understanding.

Doug Chaplin will lead this evening reflection on the place of the psalms in scripture, their use in the life of the church, and the ways in which they can help us pray today.
