The year 2025 sees the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea and its creed. How has it lasted so long? Did it deserve to do so? Does it help our Christian faith now? The creed of that Council is not what we normally refer to as ‘the Nicene Creed’, which is said at the Eucharist – why not? The creed of the Council of Nicaea is lauded for uniting the churches and is important common ground between them; but who remembers those who could not accept it or the period of theological turmoil that followed? Even now there are two versions of the Nicene Creed: the Eastern and the Western; the difference is a bone of contention – why? All these questions and more will be discussed at this talk by one of the Church of England's foremost theologians.
