Diocesan Registry

Legal books and notepad

The Diocesan Registrar is a solicitor and is the legal officer for the Diocese of Worcester, giving general legal advice to clergy, parish officers, boards and councils and overseeing the faculty system which enables churches to make changes to their buildings.

The work of the Diocesan Registry includes:

  • the licensing of clergy and lay office holders
  • patronage
  • the consecration of churches and churchyards
  • the operation of the faculty system
  • the issue of common marriage licences
  • maintenance of diocesan records
  • advice to clergy, various ecclesiastical boards and officials and the public on all these areas of activity and ecclesiastical law generally

The Registry also offers administrative assistance to the Chancellor of the Diocese, Jacqueline Humphreys, who sits as the Judge of the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Worcester. Those wishing to contact the Chancellor, or her deputy, John Summers, should do so through the Registry.

Should you wish to make a complaint in relation to the Chancellor you can download the process here.

Generally this work is financed by the Church Commissioners for England and the Worcester Diocesan Board of Finance and so is free of charge to parishes and the public. Marriage licences and certain faculties do however attract a statutory fee.

From 25 July 2022, the Registry will move to Anthony Collins Solicitors and our new Diocesan Registrar will be Kirsty Duxbury. Read more
