Over three weeks in August, Jessons CE Primary has been running a summer school, with 125 pupils attending each day aged 5 – 9 in six different bubbles. The children have had the opportunity to catch up with some maths and English alongside taking part in lots of fun activities.
Headteacher, Sarah Lea said: “At the end of last term, we sent out an email to our parents to see if there might be any interest in a summer school and were completely overwhelmed by the response! There was obviously a real need for this kind of support in our community and we really wanted to help.”

Children have attended from 10am until 3pm and alongside Sarah, the school is staffed by external supply teachers, four of the school’s teaching assistants, a First Aider and a member of the office staff. Although the school is hoping to receive some funding from the Department for Education, they began with no guarantee of this.

Sarah continued: “It’s been hard work, but really successful and the children have all enjoyed being part of it. We’ve been able to implement social distancing while still having lots of fun as well as provide some additional help with the core subjects. On one particularly hot day we even arranged for an ice cream van to come to school to give all the children an ice cream as a treat! I am very grateful to the Local Authority, who have been very supportive.”
