Approaching 5,000 poppies will again be on display this year both outside and inside St Mary and All Saints Church, Kidderminster as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served and continue to serve in armed conflicts worldwide.
Swathes of knitted, crocheted and felt poppies will adorn the inside of the church including the church’s magnificent high altar, and poppies made from plastic bottle bottoms painted to form a weatherproof poppy will form a carpet of poppies outside and a cross above the front door. All the poppies have been made by members of the congregation.
A Remembrance Sunday service will be held on Sunday, 8 November beginning outside the church at the Angel of Peace at 10.50am and continuing inside, and there will be a Remembrance Observance outside at the War Memorial on Wednesday, 11 November again starting at 10.50am following which the church will be open for quiet reflection as well as tea and coffee.
Also on Wednesday, 11 November at 7.00pm at St Mary and All Saints Church “In Memoriam”, is an evening event marking the day when the hostilities of the First World War ceased, a step back into history with its story, its songs and its poems. The usual second Saturday in the month Community Coffee Morning on Saturday, 14 November from 10.30am until 12.00 noon will also provide an opportunity to see the poppies inside and outside the church.
