A poster about the Tewkesbury Abbey theology event with Tim Curtis

We are fortunate to get Tim as he spends most of the year in Paraguay, where he works as a mission partner with CMS (the Church Mission Society). However he is a Tewkesbury native and we welcome him back to Tewkesbury Abbey.

Tim has worked with the Énxet people in Paraguay for over 40 years, and is a linguist and Bible translator. He has also helped in dubbing films into the Énxet language amongst his other work. The Énxet are an indigenous people of about 17,000 living in the Gran Chaco region of western Paraguay. Originally hunter-gatherers, many are now forced to supplement their livelihood as labourers on the cattle ranches that have encroached upon their dwindling natural forest habitat. Only a handful of Énxet are still maintaining their traditional way of life, while the majority live in small settlements.

Tim’s talk will give us a fascinating insight into the life and challenges for these indigenous people, as well as telling us all about his work with them.
