This September sees the 375th anniversary of the Battle of Worcester and there are many events taking place to celebrate the event around the City. Powick village played a significant role in this pivotal event of the English Civil War: it was the site of the first skirmish in September 1642 at the Battle of Powick Bridge then, 9 years later, the village saw the start of the final battle on 3rd September 1651 when Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian army marched up from Upton to St Peter’s Church and beyond, to invade Worcester itself, and defeat Charles II. As part of Powick Church’s programme of community and fund raising events, Howard Robinson is giving a talk on Friday 18th September in the Church, starting at 7pm, to tell more about the Battle of Worcester in general and the involvement of Powick in particular. Howard is a local authority on the Civil War and a direct descendent of Oliver Cromwell. The talk is part of the Powick Church Unlocked project, looking at how the church can better serve the community, while raising funds for urgent repairs to this “at risk” Grade 1 listed building . Entry to the event is free but donations are welcomed towards the Unlocked project. Refreshments will be available and all are very welcome.
