Evelyn Underhill was convinced that mysticism was not esoteric, but for any Christian who wanted to explore it. Her first significant book on the subject, simply called Mysticism was written while she was a Roman Catholic. Soon after the First World War she converted to Anglicanism, and it is mainly as an Anglo-Catholic spiritual writer that she is now remembered. As she says about prayer: “It is a natural human activity, no more involving the great powers and sublime experiences of the mystical saints and philosophers than the ordinary enjoyment of music involves the special creative powers of the great musician.” (Practical Mysticism).
This session will be led by the Rev’d Dr John Fitzmaurice. John is Diocesan Director of Ordinands, and a priest and psychotherapist with an interest in spiritual theology.
