Bible Reading

Luke 1:26-38

The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and God’s power will rest upon you. For this reason the holy child will be called the Son of God. Remember your relative Elizabeth. It is said that she cannot have children, but she herself is now six months pregnant, even though she is very old. For there is nothing that God cannot do.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary; “may it happen to me as you have said.” And the angel left her.

This week our reading asks us to think about how the world is turned upside down by an obedient teenage girl. Mary had no money or status. She was just an ordinary teenage girl, yet here she was standing at the heart of Gods plan to transform the world. This transformation in the world wasn’t going to come as a massive event so that everyone knew the Messiah was coming but just as an everyday common event….the birth of a baby boy.

Just like Mary, Elizabeth was also part of Gods plan. She was thought to be too old to have a baby yet she was also pregnant. God entrusted his whole plan to these two women, one very young and one past the age of having children. 

How do you think Mary felt when she saw the angel Gabriel?

Have you ever felt a bit small and ordinary?

This part of the Christmas story is showing us that God can use anyone, even though we may feel like we are too young, too old, too quiet or don’t have the knowledge needed. We don’t need all those things, we just need to be obedient and like Mary did on that day just listen and agree to do as God has planned.

Prayer

Lord God, when you call, help us to say yes. When we can help someone, help us to say yes. Help us to be obedient just like Mary. Amen
