Canon Peter Mkengi

It is with great sadness that we report on the death of Canon Peter Mkengi, sub-dean of Morogoro Cathedral and link officer for our partnership with the Diocese of Morogoro.

Peter had been suffering with a thyroid problem since the start of the year and was admitted to hospital last week before succumbing to his illness on Friday.  The Bishop of Morogoro, Bishop Godfrey was with us at last week’s clergy conference and was able to catch an earlier flight back to be with Peter’s family.

Bishop Godfrey writes:

We are truly grateful for the invitation and for the great blessing of being part of the 2026 Clergy Conference. We have come to the end of our time here having learned so much and received renewed strength for the ministry that lies ahead. Through you, our bishops and brothers in Christ, the Lord has refreshed and anointed us afresh. Thank you so much.

I am, however, very sad to end my visit while being deeply touched by the death of Canon Peter Mkengi. From the Morogoro side, I personally entrusted Peter with the responsibility of being our Link Officer, working together with Canon John Green to strengthen and coordinate the partnership between our two dioceses.

I am deeply grateful for your kind words of comfort, your prayers, and, above all, for making it possible for me to return to Morogoro earlier so that I can be present with the family and the Church during this difficult time. Peter’s death has been a great shock to the Diocese of Morogoro.

Please do pray for Peter and all our friends in the Diocese of Morogoro. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
