Bible Reading

Mark 1:14-20

After John had been put in prison, Jesus went to Galilee and preached the Good News from God. “The right time has come,” he said, “and the Kingdom of God is near! Turn away from your sins and believe the Good News!” 16 As Jesus walked along the shore of Lake Galilee, he saw two fishermen, Simon and his brother Andrew, catching fish with a net. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come with me, and I will teach you to catch people.” 18 At once they left their nets and went with him.19 He went a little farther on and saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in their boat getting their nets ready. 20 As soon as Jesus saw them, he called them; they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and went with Jesus.

Explanation

As Jesus begins his ministry he asks four fishermen to come with him and immediately they say yes. For them to respond without thinking about it means that they had a lot of courage; it was life changing as Jesus asked them to leave behind their boats and follow him. They are prepared to leave what they know behind them and learn to ‘fish for people’; with Jesus.

How easy would it be to respond to a life changing call so quickly? It was a pretty big decision. Yet Jesus wasn’t asking them to leave behind everything. He asked them to take their skills and use them for God. Instead of being fishers of fish they were about to become fishers of men. He showed all of us that the way to do that is to have God’s love in our lives and share it with others.

How do you feel when you are asked to do something different? Do you find it challenging? Or exciting? What skills do you have? Have you ever experienced God using your skills in a new way?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, we pray that when we need to make decisions you will give us courage. When we need to do something different you will give us hope and that you will reassure us as we do our best to follow you no matter what. Amen.
