Supporting Church Buildings - can you help?

Church open sign outside an open church doorWe are looking for people with expertise in a number of different areas to support our Diocesan Advisory Committee for the Care of Churches (DAC). Could you help?

The Worcester DAC advises on the care, repair and development of churches in the Diocese of Worcester: an area covering most of the county of Worcestershire, the borough of Dudley and some surrounding areas.

The panel is drawn from people with specialist skills and knowledge of the Church and in historic buildings who assist parishes in their management of church buildings and churchyards and formally advise on applications for changes to churches as part of a statutory planning system (known as Faculty Jurisdiction). The committee meets seven times a year, with further visits to churches to discuss projects. Committee members are complemented by specialist advisers, who need not attend meetings. The work of the committee is supported by the church buildings staff team employed by the Diocesan Board of Finance.

We seek interest for potential member and adviser roles in the following specialism:

  • Building Surveying / Quantity Surveying / Project Management
  • Accredited building or object conservation
  • Ecology / Biodiversity
  • AV and technical support
  • Lived experience with issues affecting access to churches for Disabled people

From the Chair of the DAC, Gareth Doodes:

Gareth Doodes"Thank you for your interest in joining the DAC and volunteering to support the churches of Worcestershire and Dudley.  Bringing their expertise to bear, committee members and advisers play a really important role in the care and cherishing of our historic church buildings and churchyards; also working proactively with clergy, congregations, professional teams, and consultative bodies to develop their use to be relevant today – and to future generations."

Expressions of interest – including an up-to-date cv and introductory letter stating the role(s) that you are interested in – should be sent to the Church Buildings Team on churches@cofe-worcester.org.uk  Informal conversations can be arranged to discuss any particular role.  All roles are voluntary but out-of-pocket expenses for site visits will be reimbursed.
