SUMMARY:Friendly Lunch – Libraries of the World with Sue Ablett
DESCRIPTION:Libraries of the World with Sue Ablett\n\nWhy would a non-librarian choose to do a talk about libraries of the world? You’ll have to come along to find out! Speaker\, Sue Ablett\, who has been Chair of Evesham Festival of Words since its inception in 2016\, is a global traveller and confesses to having a very enquiring mind. Having come across an interesting library on her travels\, it prompted her to do some more research. This talk\, which she describes\, as “fun and informative”\, romps around the world looking at libraries\, big and small\, old and new\, curious and quirky\, far flung and closer to home\, as well as some very out of the way libraries. And not all libraries just stock books – there are other interesting things you can borrow from libraries.\n\nThis is a joint Holland House/Evesham Festival of Words event.\n\nArrivals from 12.30pm\, lunch will be served at 1pm\n\nPlease note that Holland House does not provide a choice menu at meal times and it is therefore very important that you note any food types that you are unable to eat due to an allergy or you can advise of a dietary preference of vegetarian\, pescatarian\, dairy free\, gluten free or vegan.

SUMMARY:DBE: The Bible in a Year - A Collective Worship Resource
DESCRIPTION:Collective Worship can be a wonderful time of stillness\, reflection and calm in a busy day. A key part of worship is learning from the Bible and hearing the stories that it contains. These stories are central to the Christian faith and are how Christians begin to understand who God is and what he is like. However\, often the stories that we tell can seem a little disjointed and out of place. This in turn may give children a false reflection of how the events of the Bible fit together. \n\n\n\nThis resource has been created to support Collective Worship by taking pupils on a chronological tour of key stories of the Bible. Using the themes from the Big Frieze in Understanding Christianity\, this resource enables Collective Worship to be relevant\, meaningful and shows how everything fits together. \n\n\n\nEach Collective Worship session contains; a Bible reading\, a summary of the key learning from the story\, a link to school values\, a reflection\, suggestions for linking the story to the world and suggestions for introducing Christianity as a globally diverse faith. \n\n\n\nThis resource is only available to schools who attend training. In this course we will: \n\n\n\n\n	explore key concepts of the Bible\n	explore the resource and how it fits into a yearly plan for\n	collective worship\n	look at how to plan Collective Worship using the resource.\n\n\n\n\nTo Book: forms.cloud.microsoft/e/JWXafQZF9E \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:DBE: Effective Teaching & Learning of RE - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This course is aimed at all that teach RE and is essential for ECTs and those new to teaching in a church school. The expectations of teaching and learning in RE\, in line with the new statement of entitlement\, as well as the Understanding Christianity framework have greatly increased\, with a stronger focus on religious literacy and a higher emphasis on theological understanding. \n\n\n\nOver the two parts of this course\, we will look at what it means to be a ‘religiously literate teacher’and how we can support children to become religiously literate. We will also look at what it means to be theologically rigorous in our teaching and how we can promote thinking skills. \n\n\n\nPart 1 will cover: \n\n\n\n\n	the religiously literate teacher\n	the religiously literate pupil\n	religious literacy in the classroom\, including activities that can promote this across a range of\n	religious and non-religious worldviews\n	how to use ‘ways of knowing’ in RE\, including the use of theology\, human and social sciences\,\n	and philosophy.\n\n\n\n\nPart 2 will cover: \n\n\n\n\n	what it means to be theologically rigorous\n	understanding and gaining confidence in key theological terms relevant to Christianity and other\n	religious and non-religious worldviews\n	ways to introduce theological concepts in age-appropriate ways\n	continuing to use ‘ways of knowing’.\n\n\n\n\nTo Book: forms.cloud.microsoft/e/XLJB8WMunJ

SUMMARY:Preaching with Mark
DESCRIPTION:Mark is one of the most accessible and\, at the same time\, one of the most challenging of the Gospels. Mark’s Jesus is very human\, but some of his stories are ‘hard’ theologically. Understanding some of Mark’s stories and sayings requires us to understand the underlying purpose that shapes his portrait of Jesus. In this session we will use techniques from narrative criticism to begin to approach Mark as a whole\, understanding his themes and purpose as a lens through which we can preach week by week in a way that is true to the text. The only preparation required will be to read through the Gospel\, preferably in one go.\n\nThis workshop is part of the LLM continuing development programme\, but is also open to clergy and others. Led by Rev’d Dr Roger Latham\, Vicar of Malvern Priory\, it will look at Matthew’s shape\, theme\, and theology\, and how these can connect with the concerns and questions of our congregations.\n\nRoger was a student of literature to postgraduate level before ordination\, and spent 15 years as a full-time theological educator specialising in literary approaches to the Bible (which were the focus of his doctoral research). He is also a passionate amateur military historian and wargamer\, self-confessed Tolkien geek and steampunk. \n\n\n\nTo book your place please click here\n

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Learning - A very short history of Bible Reading
DESCRIPTION:As well as there being a history behind the Bible\, there is a history of the Bible. For most of its existence\, most Christians have been unable to read\, and so the Bible has been listened to more than read. Because it was often read in the language of scholars – Latin – people didn’t always understand it. Instead they approached it through pictures and the stories those pictures told. Sometimes\, they approached it through drama\, as we still do with nativity scenes and passion plays. \n\n\n\nThose who did read were aware that there was a huge amount of diversity from its human authors\, including some very difficult passages\, but a fundamental unity that came from its divine author. They therefore worked out ways of reading it that would help deepen their understanding of\, and relationship with\, God. \n\n\n\nIn this third and final session\, Doug Chaplin will explore some of the ways the Bible has been read and used over history\, and see what we can learn from our ancestors in faith. \n\n\n\nDoug Chaplin is the Discipleship and Lay Training Officer for the Diocese. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nTo book your place please click here

SUMMARY:Friendly Lunch – Dr Albert Schweitzer and Reverence for Life
DESCRIPTION:Dr Albert Schweitzer and Reverence for Life\nAlbert Schweitzer 1875-1965 was a polymath from Alsace. Before the age of 30\, he had achieved international academic fame in a wide range of subjects.\nSchweitzer was driven by an awareness of suffering and a need to pay something back for his gifts and happy childhood. In his twenties he decided that\, at the age of 30\, he would study medicine\, and then go out to Africa to work as a doctor. For the next 50 years\, he financed and ran a hospital for Africans.\nSchweitzer developed the principle of Reverence for Life. In 1952\, now world-famous\, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. However\, by the time Schweitzer died\, attitudes had changed and admiration for his humanity had diminished. His hospital was also seen as outdated compared with modern hospitals.\nIn this talk\, Galen Bartholomew will review Schweitzer’s life\, suggesting that he should be seen as a man of his time\, and that his philosophy still has relevance today.\n\nThis is a joint event with Evesham Festival of Words.\n\nArrivals from 12.30pm\, lunch will be served at 1pm\n\nPlease note that Holland House does not provide a choice menu at meal times and it is therefore very important that you note any food types that you are unable to eat due to an allergy or you can advise of a dietary preference of vegetarian\, pescatarian\, dairy free\, gluten free or vegan.
