Bible Reading

Mark 4:26-34

The Parable of the Growing Seed

He also said, “This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

Again he said, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32 Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

In the passages today, Jesus is sharing two parables about growth, patience, and hope.   The world around us can teach us about growth, patience, and hope.  Did you know there are some trees that are over 2000 years old – that means they were growing when Jesus was living here on earth.   I wonder how old you are.  Are you still growing?  Growing taller, and growing in knowledge, what about growing in faith?  This would be called discipleship – long word!  It simply means to grow in our knowledge of God.

When you plant a seed, you need to take care of it, making sure that it gets enough sunlight and enough, but not too much water.  We can also help our faith to grow, by talking to God, and reading our Bibles and watching God’s creation to grow, teaching us patience and hope.

Think about:

  • When did you last read the Bible and learn something new?

  • The variety of different plants, colours, and textures – how each grew from a tiny seed.

  • How might you help your own faith to grow?

Dear Jesus,
thank you that I grow and learn each day.
Thank you for your wonderful creation,
help me to watch and learn from your creation,
but most of all help me grow in my faith in you.
