"I have run out of ideas for my club programme, can you help?"
"Isolation is my problem, I have not got anybody who I can really talk to."
"Young people's questions are sometimes hard to answer and embarrassing can you help?"
"I don't know who I can share this information with, the church does not want to change, it does not encourage young people enough."
"I was asked to lead a youth group, I was told that it would only take up three hours of my time on a Monday night, they leave me alone to get on with the job. Very few people ask me about the work I am doing." |

| So what sort of support are you looking for? |
Is it affirmation that things are going well?
Is it a challenge to the way you are working? (Good practice)
Do you need someone to talk to about your working relationships?
You may be looking for ways of encouraging other people to get involved.
Are you looking for someone who will stimulate you and encourage you with new ideas?
Or maybe you have personal needs, which will be met by meeting with another individual who has skills in youth work, and can understand your situation.
Maybe it's an understanding ear you need.

| Perhaps you could make a start by exploring your own support networks and needs? |
Make a list of where you get support at the moment.
Name the people who have been, or are most helpful to you.
Those you wish were more supportive.
What support does the Christian community offer? Your priest/minister, church council, or management committee.
Where are the gaps? And why are they there? What do you need to fill the gap?
|
| Why not... |
Why not get in touch with a number of youth workers in your area and arrange to meet and discuss the above questions?
Why not start this process off around a meal, for example a breakfast. Or you could arrange to meet in the local pub, or restaurant, and make an occasion out of it.
I would be very happy to convene a support group in your area if there was enough interest.
